was born in 1958 and has translated Japanese (postwar) literature and nonfiction for nearly 30 years. Her authors include K. Ôe, Y. Mishima, H. Murakami, the philosopher K. Karatani and the Manga authors Y. Tsuge and S. Mizuki. She was awarded the Translator Prize of the Japan Foundation in 2008 and (together with Ursula Gräfe), the Noma prize for literary translation in 2019.  As a member of the Weltlesebühne, she organizes and participates in a variety of translation events. Recently she has also begun working in the field of continuing education for young translators.
