Ida Hadjivayanis

teaches at SOAS University of London, where she teaches the Swahili Studies programme. She has translated Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah’s novel Paradise (1994) into Swahili (Peponi, Mkukina Nyota, 2022), his only work in an African language. Her area of research is the Swahili diaspora, its language and translation. Her most recent publication The Swahili Mtapta: Exploring Translation in Abdulrazak Gurnah’s ‘Paradise’ will appear in ALT #41 (Africa Literature Today). Ida Hadjivayanis is the 2023 Global Africa Translation Fellow of the Africa Institute Sharjah. She is the co-founder of the annual SOAS Baraza Swahili Conference and currently directs the MA African Studies and BA Africa and Black Diaspora programmes at SOAS.
